Our team has delivered innovations in optical measurement for more than three decades, working hand-in-hand with academia and industry partners.

Unprecedented measurement accuracy

Since launching our first instruments in 1992, we’ve enabled our customers to optimize manufacturing, reducing costs and waste.

Born from experience

Our founder drew on deep experience of working with dozens of companies and leading research institutes to inspire our ground-breaking innovations.

The Conoptica timeline

Here are some of the major milestones in our history.

1985 - 1990

Starting our journey

Founded in 1985 by Dr. Ing. Gudmund Slettemoen, a pioneer in the use of optical systems for measurement, with research undertaken at NTH, Arizona’s Optical Sciences Center, and SINTEF.

1991-1995

Entering the Wire and Cable industry

Conoptica AS acts as consultants on optical instruments for dozens of companies and research institutes, identifying flaws with existing approaches. As a result, the Die Profiler is born.

1996-2000

Worldwide success and growth

Conoptica's Die Profiler rapidly attracts industry attention, bringing a novel approach to drawing die measurement to the Wire and Cable industry. With its innovative 3D-outline solution, it becomes widely adopted globally.

2001-2005

Investment in innovation

Building on its continued success, Conoptica extended the range of drawing die measurement systems, and developed a new software platform to bring its innovations to the wider machine tool sector.

2006-2010

Towards CU2

An entirely new sensor technology – CU2 – was created, designed to support production quality and control for machine tools. The proven 3D-outline platform was combined with the new Fingerpatch solution.

2011-2015

Tool and Track debut

CU2 Tool and Track were launched, bringing a new approach to machine tool and workpiece measurement – from inside the machine. Meanwhile, integration with major CNC system providers was achieved.

2016-2020

Becoming the gold standard

An innovative second radius compensation method was added to the CU2 Tool, while unique bearing asymmetry and shaped die measurement capabilities were added for the Wire and Cable portfolio.

2021-present

Building the community

CU2 Tool – Turning was introduced, extending the CU2 range — and an enhanced GUI was introduced for all versions. New partners were added to our resellers, and we grew our sales team with key recruits across all departments.

FAQs

New to Conoptica? Do you have a question? Discover a few things about our company, history and focus – and get in touch if you want to know more!

What do you do?

We develop and deliver the most accurate measurement tools for the metalworking industry, with a focus on the Machine Tool and Wire and Cable sectors. Our solutions depend on our innovative, camera-based technology, which delivers unprecedented accuracy. We help our customers boost production, reduce waste – and deliver higher quality production output.

What is unique about Conoptica?

Our customers are distributed globally – everywhere there is manufacturing, we have clients and partners. Our business in Norway hardly registers, in fact – our solutions are almost exclusively exported – with a particular focus on Asia. This means we have a very broad outlook, a diverse team – and an extensive travel schedule, so we can meet customers in person and provide the services they need.

How have you pioneered camera-based measurement?

We were the first in the world to take innovations in camera-based measurement and apply them to the industrial metrology. We’ve been doing this since the early 1990s, at a time when traditional solutions dominated the field – and our efforts have helped change the industry, bringing to the fore the capabilities and accuracy that camera-based measurement delivers.

What is unique about your technology?

It’s in the combination of expertise across multiple disciplines. Our team is comprised of experts in software, mechanics, optics, production and more. As a result, we’re able to bring all these together to design and produce world-leading solutions that genuinely advance the field of metrology for industrial applications.

Why are you based in Trondheim?

Trondheim is the centre of a dynamic engineering and scientific community, based on one of Europe’s leading universities – NTNU. NTNU attracts students from all over the world, for its under- and postgraduate courses. As such, our area has some of the brightest minds and best-educated engineers available and a thriving innovation scene. It’s also lovely, but that’s another story.

Can you offer global service and support?

Yes. We’ve been delivering our solutions for more than 30 years and we’ve built the team, processes and resources to ensure that we deliver. Every customer and partner gets the same level of service, support and attention – and our team travels the world to ensure satisfaction and quality. That’s why our solutions and relationships have outstanding longevity.
