FAQs

Here we answer some of our most frequently asked questions...

What are the benefits of camera-based measurements?

Camera-based measurements allow you to look at the whole tool at a single point in time. This allows us to analyse the tool and measure many parameters quickly and accurately. This also allows Conoptica to apply digital cleaning to the images captured.

What is digital cleaning?

Digital cleaning is a technique that relies on the fact that we examine the whole tool. From this perspective, we can identify which parts of the tool are actually dirt – and which are not. Reference models mean this cleaning is very efficient - and makes the Conoptica CU2 Tool the most reliable system for measurement in-process (as opposed to at-the-start-of-process).

How long does it take to get a full characterisation of the milling tool?

This depends on the tool size, number of cutters, degree of precision required, among other factors — but on average, 20 seconds.

How does the CU2 Tool/Track communicate with the machine?

As the CU2 devices is integrated with many different machine tools, from a wide range of manufacturers, the integration can take different forms. Please make contact us if you need to know how we can communicate with your machine.

Which NC Controls does the CU2 Tool work with?

Today, the CU2 Tool can connect to Siemens, Heidenhain, FANUC, Mitsubishi and Beckhoff controllers, among others. Please contact us for a full list.

How does Conoptica provide support?

Conoptica has a team of experts on optical camera-based measurement ready to answer your questions and help you with your problems. While we strive to make online support available to all, not all service can be done electronically. Because of this Conoptica has a service department that provides services to partners and customers in need all over the world.

Why should I use a CU2 Track on my Wire EDM machine?

  • To correct cuts that don't meet tolerances.
  • To understand the cut and which parameters to tune.
  • To document the workpiece that has just been cut.

What is the benefit of a reference model for milling tool measurement?

Reference models tell the CU2 Tool how the tool looks and allows the system to do digital cleaning - filtering out dirt and oil to give reliable measurement results - even mid-process.

What do I need to consider if I go from a laser tool setter to a camera-based system?

A camera-based system is more advanced tool than a laser tool setter. Because of this, you can benefit by giving the system more information. Filling in tool tables with the number of cutters and r2 values allows the system both to create reference models, and to determine if the correct tool is placed in the pocket.

What differentiates Conoptica’s camera-based tool measurement from other camera-based technologies?

While there are other camera-based tool measurement solutions, the CU2 Tool is the only one that combines a large field of view with high resolution measurements. This makes it possible to reap the benefits from looking at a larger part of the tool, while still being able to provide superior repeatability of the measurements.

Can I install a CU2 Tool on my milling machine?

It depends on machine type. Please contact us to see if we can find a solution that will work for your machines.
